What’s the Difference Between the Two Astrology Systems?
Zodiac signs can be defined in two main ways—neither is “right” or “wrong,” so you can follow whichever resonates with you:
- Sidereal AstrologyThis system uses the actual constellations in the ecliptic (the path the sun, moon, and planets take across the sky). Your sign is determined by which constellation the sun appears in on your birthday. It’s most commonly practiced in India.
- Western AstrologyUsed widely in the U.S., this system starts counting signs from the vernal equinox (the first day of spring) each year. Each sign lasts exactly 30.43 days (1/12 of the year), so start/end dates shift slightly (by 1 day or less) annually (since the equinox time varies). While it uses constellation names, it doesn’t track the sun’s exact position in the stars.
Over our lifetimes, the two systems’ sign dates differ by about a month. This is because they aligned 2,000 years ago, but Earth’s axis “wobbles” (like a top) in a 28,000-year cycle—slowly shifting how the stars appear on the equinox.
